Internships can be pivotal experiences in your professional journey, offering valuable opportunities to gain real-world experience, build networks, and enhance your resume. As a Scottish university student with a long summer break, I faced the choice between pursuing my passion for travel and gaining professional experience to enhance my CV and refine my career interests. I chose to combine these goals by applying for an internship abroad and successfully secured a 10-week position in the finance department at AP Group, with the support of the Intern Group. This international move required a significant investment of both time and money, so I was determined to make the most of the experience. Here is my advice for maximising your internship opportunities.
1. Set Clear Goals
Maximising your internship starts with setting clear personal goals. Instead of drifting through tasks, define what you want to achieve and how you plan to get there. Whether it’s mastering a specific skill, contributing to a key project, or expanding your professional network, develop a clear plan. I found it useful to discuss my goals with my supervisor to ensure that my tasks aligned with my objectives. This clarity helped me stay focused and motivated throughout my internship.
2. Be Proactive
To get the most out of your internship, it’s important to actively seek out opportunities by being proactive. Rather than passively waiting for tasks to be assigned, offer assistance wherever possible. Look for ways to contribute beyond your defined role. This proactive approach not only refines your skills but also demonstrates your enthusiasm, positioning you as a valuable team member. Embracing this mindset can lead to increased responsibilities, deeper involvement in key projects, and greater visibility within the organisation.
3. Build Relationships
Building strong relationships is one of the most valuable aspects of the experience. Put effort into engaging with colleagues and supervisors, show genuine interest in their roles and insights, as these connections can greatly enrich your experience and provide valuable networking opportunities. My own experience has been made more enjoyable thanks to the friendly and welcoming team here at AP Group, which has made it easier to settle in. Equally important is adapting to the office culture and etiquette. This ability to blend into different workplace environments not only helps you fit in and perform well during your internship but also prepares you well for future roles.
4. Be Adaptable
Adaptability is crucial for making the most of your internship because it helps you navigate a constantly changing work environment. Being adaptable means, you can quickly adjust to new challenges, take on different roles, and learn from a variety of experiences. This flexibility not only keeps you productive but also allows you to explore new tasks and discover interests you never know you had. At AP Group, I have had the opportunity to explore various areas of the business and tackle a range of tasks, which helped me pinpoint my areas of interest. opportunities.
5. Take Advantage of Learning Opportunities
Taking advantage of learning opportunities is key to enriching your internship experience. Internships offer a unique chance to gain practical experience and develop new skills beyond theoretical knowledge. Immersing yourself in these opportunities, you’ll not only broaden your skill set but also gain deeper insights into the industry. Actively seek out projects that interest you and don’t hesitate to ask questions. Engaging fully with these experiences demonstrate your eagerness to grow and prepares you for future professional challenges.
6. Reflect and Seek Feedback
Regularly reflecting on your experiences and seeking feedback are essential for making the most of your internship. Take time to assess your performance, understand your strengths and identify areas you wish to improve. I found that reflecting on my daily tasks helped me recognise the skills I was developing and how I can apply them to future challenges. Additionally, actively seeking constructive feedback from supervisors and colleagues provides valuable insights that guide growth. By combining self-reflection with external feedback, you create a dynamic learning opportunity.
In conclusion, making the most of your internship is about actively engaging with every opportunity that comes your way. As someone who journeyed from Scotland to Australia for an internship over my summer break, I’ve learned firsthand how setting clear goals, being proactive, and building strong relationships can transform your experience. Embrace each challenge, seek out learning opportunities, and reflect on your progress. Your internship is more than just a resume booster; it can be a foundational chapter in your professional journey.

About the author:
Mia Macnamara has joined AP Group for a 10-week internship, bringing her enthusiasm all the way from Scotland. A third-year economics student at the University of Glasgow, Mia is eager to put her analytical skills to the test in a real-world business environment. Her talent for detailed data analysis and reporting has already made her an invaluable asset to the AP Finance team in no time.
But it’s not all work and no play – Mia has made the most of her time in Australia, too.
She braved an 11-hour bus ride down the Great Ocean Road, taking in the stunning scenery (with plenty of time to contemplate why she didn’t just drive herself!). She also took to the seas for a trip to the Great Barrier Reef, where she spotted whales, sharks, turtles, and more tropical fish than she could count.
Whether she’s diving into market trends or sharing tales of her latest escapade, Mia is embracing every challenge and making the most of her time here, and we’re thrilled to have her on board.
